My 4 Secrets To Happiness


“Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be”  said  Abraham Lincoln.    I have experienced few strategies that work like the magic to paint happiness and am sharing four of them.

1)      PLAY BACK: Go back  5 years in the past and find happy moments.  Play them and replay them.  Then go back 10 years in the past and find your happy moments.  Play them and replay them in your mind.  This will uplift your mood and also improve your MEMORY.

2)      SMILE: Every odd hours of your day such as 7, 9, 11. Stop and smile for a minute. Repeat this exercise three times at the clock of every odd hour.

3)      PINCH a PENCIL: Pinch a pencil in your lips across and hold it with your teeth so that your lips corners are stretched.  Maintain the posture for a minute or two.

4)      GRATEFUL AND GRATITUDE:  Before going to sleep write down your gratitude list and what are you grateful for the day.  Practice it for next 7 days and your mood will lift up. Practice it for next 14 days and you will begin supporting a grin.  Practice it for next 21 days and you will wear  a permanent smile on your face.  Gratitude is a very  powerful emotion and it wipes out negative emotions out of your life style such as sadness, unhappiness,  resentment,  jealousy and so on.

It only takes one person to make you happy and change your life:  YOU.  Hence practice the above four principles and be happy

Why Internet is a Universe of Opportunities

InternetInternet has created level playing field.   Anyone can go online and take up free education.      In the past few weeks I have been browsing through the net and I picked up few powerful lessons that I would like to share

  1. FEEL STUCK AND BORED: List down a new person you can meet, a new place to visit or a new activity to engage.  And once your list is ready go and meet, visit engage in the new activity.  Message: Grow this list and meet new people new place and learn new things. 
  2. PROCRASTINATION: Procrastination is tool of poor. You have been procrastinating an important job, activity or a meet. You dread taking the first step.  SOLUTION:  There are two options.
    1. Nag (internal dialogue) yourself to take the first step.
    2. And if you have no clue how the job should be done, write down the names of all people who can help you. Now go ask them for help.
  3. The other day I was listening to YouTube interview of a billionaire and he was asked “What is one thing that has helped you immensely in your business?” and his response was listening to people. Message: Listen more than you speak and you will never regret.
  4. Create an imaginary or virtual master mind group (Idea from “THINK AND GROW RICH”). The virtual master mind members may  be top 5 richest, Nobel laureate or global leader past or current – Read their biography before you visualize calling them for a meet.  You will be surprised that when you ask them for answers to your pressing challenges, you will begin discovering answers yourselfMessage : We have answers to all the challenges it’s just that our mind needs a little nudge.

Enjoy your life and include one new activity, person, place during the day and your life will never be the same.  Remember Journey of thousands mile begins with the first step.

Experience makes you more attractive.


MagnetLast week I was expected to meet a friend in Dubai but was feeling a bit lazy because it would have taken me an hour to drive through traffic and an hour to drive back. Friend called up to reconfirm the meet and I promptly agreed when he said that he has just returned from a full day training session on a yacht. Now this peaked my interest looking forward to interesting conversation.

Yesterday I was expected to meet another friend and once again felt lazy until the friend called up to reconfirm. I had a strong mind to postpone the meet but somehow resisted. And am glad I met him because I began asking him about his hobbies and was exposed to absolutely new side of his personality that was an opportunity to learn and work on Mobile Commerce opportunity.

Now you may be wondering why do I fix up meetings on first place when I am not certain to comply. My answer is I fix up meet to discuss a specific subject but during the time from “Confirmation to the Meet” time my interest takes a deep dive.

On the flip side my post is not about confirming meet and subsequently missing on meeting. What I would like to bring up is that LIFE EXPERIENCES bring in STICKY factor in your personality. The more experiences you undergo and of-course good experiences the more ATTRACTIVE you become. And one simple process way to absorb more experiences is meet people, meet new people and master the art of probing questions. Because you will never uncover others experiences if you don’t ask probing questions.

How to “Get back your OPTIMISM”


kids.sand.111As we grow up the demands on our time and resources shoots an upward trajectory. The demand plants stress and depression in our fertile mind. How can you insulate yourselves from perceived stress and depression? Simply follow Rule of Three ….

1. 30 MINUTES: Get up early and take a “TALL WALK” walk in the park. This has multiple benefits

  • Research says that sunlight acts as a refresher tonic.
  • Colour green sprouts up the mood like the sprouting seeds impacting our overall well-being. 
  • Walking tall peps up your confidence.
  • Walking for 30 minutes massages your body muscle increase flow of blood thus acting as a lubricant. Further it enhances the flow of positive hormones in your body.

2. 3 MINUTES: Gaze up in the sky for next 3 minutes. And while gazing count the birds, play with shape of clouds or simply day dream. Chin up gazing uplifts and brings in positive mindset. This too has multiple benefits

  • When you look up towards RIGHT you access stored memories part of your brain – Good exercise to ruminate on past success/past images/experiences.
  • When you look up towards LEFT you access creativity/construction part of your brain.
  • Further Chin up is a good exercise to firm up your neck muscles.

3. 5 MINUTES: Sit down in a quiet place, close your eyes and hmmm OM. This too has multiple impact

  • a. Sharpens your focus.
  • b. The OM sound acts like a balm on your nerves.

Incorporate Rule of “3” tips in your lifestyle and get back your OPTIMISM in next 20 days.

Your Traffic signals and Road signs ?

Traffic_signalDubai is building more roads, more bridges/tunnels, more Salik but still not able to cope with traffic problems.   Imagine the sight of Dubai roads if Dubai did not have traffic signals, bridges/tunnels & road signs.  

Well our mind is somewhat similar with over 60,000 thoughts running in a day.  And most of the time multiple thoughts meander and collide because we have not installed traffic signals or road signs; resultant we invite stress and our productivity level is shot down.

People say focusing your mind on one subject brings the maximum impact. Focused mind also brings more peace and happiness.  In a research on a group of monks who had been practicing extreme meditation, it was found that their frontal lobe lit up when meditating which is a response triggered when you are very happy.  Hence research proves that focusing your attention on one single task at a time makes you happy.  And probably this is the reason we are happy when our mind is uncluttered.

I would suggest few practical tips to bring focus and the tips are INTERNAL and EXTERNAL.  Let’s talk about


  1. Think inside the box: (BRIDGES AND TUNNELS) Assume I ask you “In next 15 seconds write down names of as many green colour things”  And thereafter I ask you in next 15 seconds write the names of all green colour things in your refrigerator.”  Guess which question will invite a longer list?
  2. Many a time (TRAFFIC SIGNALS) we engage people in a conversation who we have earlier cheated us or did not keep up to their promises.  And when we engage with such people it impacts us adversely; our mood and metabolism.  Hence discipline yourself to avoid negative people and negative thoughts.  Practice this exercise for the first half of the day and slowly extend it to the day, week and month.
  3. Six thinking hats (ROAD SIGNS) : This is about exercising your thinking.  At any given time think why an idea will work, think why it will not work and think how you can make it better.  Use Edward De Bono Six thinking Hats methodology to train your thinking.
  4. 80/20 Rule: (HIGHWAY/EXPRESS WAY) Apply 80/20 rule in your professional life.  List out all activities and decide what is 80% and OUT and what is 20% and IN.


  1. Every afternoon (FRIDAY MORNING DRIVE ON DUBAI ROADS) before your lunch time and after you reach home in the evening;  sit down quietly for 15 minutes and meditate or sit still with no distraction – no TV, No internet, no call, no newspaper and no email  just be with yourself.

 Enjoy a stress free life.

Lesson that Changed my Life

Simple Lessons

Simple lessons are masked in simple experiences. On the flip side simple lessons are the strongest foundation of our success that is taught in no schools.   Let me share seven simple lessons that changed my life.

  1. ASK for what you want….. Effectively:  I joined sales and failed miserably because I did not ask for orders. I suffered more because I did not ask for help either.  How I wish I had a mentor who could have taught me the importance of asking and asking effectively.  Because when I realized the importance of asking I faltered on asking effectively.
  2. You improve when you step out of your COMFORT zone:   This lesson can change your life and changed mine too.    I would make few unplanned calls a day.  Some time I would not make any calls and compensate the time with mundane activities i.e. Making proposal or hand delivering proposal copy.  I was not progressing.  Sooner I stepped out of my comfort zone and began making 4 planned visits a day for the week ahead.  Results improved and my learning increased.
  3. Your personality blossoms when you attempt NEW TASK for the first time Winston Churchill once said “Change is improvement and perfection is change often.”  I had covered most of my life years walking a straight line.  And one fine day after a profound discussion with friends I decided to learn one new task every six months.  Result I made new friends acquired new skills and discovered new revenue streams.   4. You build strong teams, when you begin looking for GOOD in others:   In a corporate world no sooner you walk into the office you are being judged and judgment is about finding faults.  What if you endeavor to find good in others; what is their strength where they will be the best fit.  Good Manager becomes better Manager when he looks for good in others.    Successful leaders find good in other which other may not see or the person himself is not aware of.  Many years ago one of my employers picked up a supermarket floor salesman to sell technology and he went on to ace the sales achievement numbers year on year.  Employer would successfully repeat this exercise by hiring people from different domain and positioning them in another.
  5. Be your CHEER leader Everyone needs encouragement and there are two options to achieving so – either wait for the third party to cheer you up or begin cheering yourself up.  Either of them works because our brain does not distinguish between the two commands.  So be your cheer leader.
  6. LOVE yourself:   This is extremely important to develop and it is internal as well as external.  Internal refers to healthy living – exercise and positive thinking and external refers to continuous learning to sparkle your knowledge.  When you practice this principle you will begin to love yourself and others too.
  7. Get comfortable with setbacks and faster you will succeed:  I realized whenever I had a challenge my performance dropped because I was consumed by worries what would happen now?  Later I realized that more setbacks I experienced more confident I grew – no more cloud of worries.  Hence I decided to take bigger risk to get early lessons and succeed faster.

Everybody has PROBLEMS


Imagine you call up your customer for the outstanding payment and the response is “We cannot make the payment please take back the equipment.”   Later in the evening you receive a call that your best  friend has been admitted to the hospital.

Next morning you  go for a health checkup and the Doctor says that you have a high  cholesterol. Later in the day your appraisal has been completed and your senior neither recommends a raise nor a promotion. Aah!

How do you react?  Most of the people in your situation will fold up and withdraw in self-pity and cursing.   On the flip side there are a handful few  who bounce back with vigour and high octane fuel.  Where do they get the inspiration to bounce back?

Well I have a close friend who always bounces back irrespective how hard he hits the ground.  I am amazed by his capacity to let go of the past and move forward hence I called on him to request recipe for his secret sauce.   He kept quiet for sometime and said Vinod lets go watch Cricket live telecast.

He switched on the TV and we were  engrossed in the game of cricket.  Just when the game was getting interesting,  he switched off the TV.  I shouted  …….. what!  He said about an hour back you asked me my Secret sauce to bounce back.  I suppose you got the answer.  He further said that whenever I have a bad day; I just shift my focus to things I enjoy doing.  And then he said “Did you notice 20,000 people in the stadium watching the game of cricket?  How excited they were ?  They are die hard cricket fans who enjoy watching live cricket at any cost.  And for them Cricket is the source for an inspiration and forget their troubles for the time.”   He said the secret sauce is “focus your thoughts on the things you enjoy and sooner your troubles will be gone.”

My next question to you is “what do you enjoy doing?”    I will share my list of few that I have compiled and  enjoy doing.

  1. READING NON-FICTION BEST SELLERS:-  My favourite “The Magic of Thinking big,” “Who moved my cheese;” “Think and Grow Rich;” “The Monk who sold his Ferrari;”  “Yes the 50 secrets of Persuasion;” “Outliers;” “Tipping point” “The Brain Advantage” and so on.
  2. LISTENING TO AUDIO :-  Listening in the car or on my MP3, Inspirational speeches by Jim  Rohn, Sandeep Maheshwari, Brian Tracy and TED.
  3. NATURE IS A SUPERB CURE :– Going for an early morning walk.  There is power in the early hour’s cool wind and the silence in the air.
  4. TALKING TO POSITIVE PEOPLE WHO UPLIFT AND INSPIRE YOU :– A friend, colleague or a family member. Or attend a seminar or an event with an uplifting theme.
  5. ATTEND TOASTMASTERS MEETING or visit a museum or an art exhibition.
  6. Reading my GRATITUDE book.
  7. And finally SKIPPING, STAIR CLIMBING or a short jog.

What is your Secret Sauce?

6 REASONS I failed in my 2013 RESOLUTIONS


2013 has come to an end and new year 2014 is on the horizon.  2012 I failed in my resolutions whereas in 2013 I failed miserably in my resolutions.  This time I have decided to try a different process and am sharing my thoughts in the post.   I will agree on resolution provided I can answer the following 6 questions.

  1. Write my new year’s resolutions.
  2. Write down why I want to achieve them?
  3. Do I have the right tools to achieve them?
  4. Do I believe in them?
  5. Do I have a plan?
  6. Finally are they aligned with my goals in life?

If I have a compelling answer to the above Six QUESTIONS then go ahead and incorporate them as part of my 2014 resolution. And in the event I don’t;  either I drop them or find  compelling reason and then make that part of   2014 resolution.

Trending Topic in Dubai “TRAFFIC Jams”

I was surfing the net when I got a Skype call from a friend in India.  He said “Hi – I am driving and thought of connecting with you through Skype.”     Last Thursday while driving on Emirates road I noticed a long line of vehicles ahead hence I decided to turn towards the city to avoid the traffic.  Alas the situation was worse; the traffic had come to stand still.   That’s when I realized the traffic in Dubai will continue to grow grim over the next few years.  And there are numerous reasons contributing to Traffic jams and am sharing few of them:

Why Traffic jams:

  • Population increase.
  • Increase in number of vehicles on the road.
  • Limitation of infrastructure to handle increase in traffic.
  • Global events such as Expo 2020 and other regional events taking place in UAE are contributing towards increased movement of vehicle on DUBAI  roads.
  • More and more people using cars and not carpooling.
  • People from other Emirates not encouraged using Metro services.
  • Car owners not using Metro unless it connects direct office to residence.

What can Dubai government do to minimize traffic jams?

  • Expand and build road infrastructure to support future growth.
  • Develop a feeder Metro; bus and taxi services to connect main metro stations
  • Restrict traffic on certain commercials zones.
  • Restrict type of traffic or vehicles during certain time periods or days
  • Support car pool services and make it simpler.
  • Build multi-storied parking zones next to metro stations.
  • Work with other Emirates to ease entry and exit choke points.

 The traffic jam cost sweat equity in terms of man-hours lost.  So what is the solution ?  Well I am sharing my thoughts to minimize and add value to your time on the road and or tips to utilize your time when stuck in traffic jam.

  1. Identify a suitable less traffic time to travel such as leaving early from home to office and office to home.
  2. Use metro to reach faster and Fresh in Dubai
  3. Buy your groceries and essential items online to be delivered to your home.  And save general purchase commute time.
  4. Cut down on Commute Time:
    • Find residence next to your office.
    • Use digital tools such as video conference for meetings.
    • Replace onsite with online seminars and web events
    • Identify convenient meeting places for business meetings in the city such as coffee shop or restaurants equipped with WIFI
  5. Things  to do when in the car:
    • Listen to audio program – Create your University in car
    • Listen to your favorite music.
    • Touch base with business and friends
    • Utilize time to fix up meetings.
    • Call on Radio Stations and participate in contests
    • Practice breathing exercises – my favourite
    • Practice Memory exercises
    •  Use time to plan your next day
    •  Set aside travel time for brainstorming new ideas – my favourite

  1. Happiness is watching your favourite movie
  2. Happiness is accidently meeting your school friend after 20 years at a shopping mall.
  3. Happiness is finding parking space on the first attempt
  4. Happiness is getting up without an alarm and raring to go out
  5. Happiness is enjoying a fresh glass of orange juice
  6. Happiness is helping out your house boy write a letter to his family
  7. Happiness is wishing your parents happy Birthday
  8. Happiness is recovering your misplaced mobile phone in a Taxi
  9. Happiness is getting the best seat in the restaurant of your choice.

 Happiness is a state of mind and so is otherwise.  Choice is yours
