If you can be a great mentor and an effective coach to someone; why can’t you be an effective mentor and coach to yourself? There is one simple answer; SELF DISCIPLINE.
We know ourselves the best; we also know what is good for us but lack self discipline. No wonder many of us make a New Year’s resolution and by the 10th of January… it has been left behind, now lost in a dark alley. And when the next year begins, we begin with a fresh New Year resolution; once again to be broken by the 15th of January. Does this story sound familiar?
My topic is not about making resolutions or breaking resolutions. My topic is about DISCIPLINE. It is here that I would like to share the formula of Marshal Goldsmith, a world renowned coach to the top echelons of the fortune 100. He says, decide on what you want to achieve, list it down on a piece of paper. Then go find a partner. Share with him your list and request him to follow up with you on a daily basis. This may be over the phone or even a meet once a week. Or better still, involve him in your journey, have him list down his activities and hand that list to you to follow up. The end result; you two are mentors to each other. A mentor not to extend guidance but to exercise discipline
